Sligo Technology
Sligo Adventist School owns approximately 60 desktop computers that are installed in the library, administrative offices, the computer laboratory, and in every classroom. Administrators are also equipped with laptop computers. All computers and printers are connected to a 10 megabit Ethernet local area network (LAN), which is supported by a rack-based computer server. The Surf Patrol software program is used to ensure that students access only appropriate Web sites.
Technology Use in Offices: Administrative offices are equipped with the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software. QuickBooks is the accounting and financial management software application. School Minder and GradeQuick comprise the suite of administrative software, which the school uses to manage student information such as addresses, phone numbers, grades, etc.
Technology Use in Classrooms: In addition to operating a computer laboratory containing 25 computers, each classroom is wired to accommodate two networked computers and printer. Classroom computers allow students access to the school’s online library catalog and Internet.
After a student finishes reading a self-selected book from the available collection, he/she takes the computerized reading test. The AR program awards points based on the length and difficulty of the book and the student’s comprehension of what he/she has read. The student receives immediate feedback and teachers are able to measure and monitor the student’s performance and progress. Parents also can go on-line to check their child/rens grades so they can keep abreast of their child’s progress.
Several teachers use the computer lab for guided research carried out by their students, to administer tests that are graded by the computer, and for other exercises.
